Authorities are searching for a man they say jumped from the second floor of a courthouse after his sentencing on a child support conviction.

In a statement Monday, the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office said Rashad Hawkins appeared in Child Support Court and was sentenced to serve time for failure to pay child support.

Before he could be detained, however, Hawkins fled the courtroom, jumping from the second floor and fleeing on foot.

If you know where Hawkins is or have seen him, please call the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office at 423-334-5268.

The Cleveland City Council met Monday covering several items of business including improvements to Paul Huff Parkway and 25th Street. One of the highest priorities is to work on the traffic situation on Paul Huff, including widening of several intersections in the corridor, creating medians in certain sections of Paul Huff, and a smart system for managing traffic. Improvements on the 25th Street corridor are also coming, with plans still being finalized in cooperation with TDOT. And for those wondering what happened to the letter “C” on the Welcome to Cleveland sign, it turns out someone shook it and it fell off. The city has possession of the letter “C” and will need to purchase a clamp to reinstall it.

The Bradley County Commission met on Monday covering several items of business. Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis awarded a certificate of achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to Renee Samples. This is her sixth time winning that certificate. Also, Mayor Davis reported that COVID-19 cases in Bradley County are down, and the number of vaccines per week are also down. Friday will be the last day to get vaccines at First Baptist. Next week, they will be given at the Health Department, which has recently received $300,000 in renovations. During the meeting, several members of the audience expressed concerns within the community based on the chance of property taxes being increased due to the new assessments of property within the county. This concern came especially in light of the pandemic. Several commissioners respond, including Milan Blake who noted that there are no active discussions or plans to raise property taxes.

The Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) will present the 28th Mel Bedwell Small Businessperson of the Year Award during the annual Small Business Month luncheon on Wednesday, May 26, at noon at the Museum Center at 5ive Points.

The luncheon, presented by Pinnacle Financial Partners, will feature guest speaker Mitch Patel, founder of Vision Hospitality Group.

The Mel Bedwell Small Businessperson of the Year Award honors an outstanding small businessperson in Cleveland and Bradley County for their success in six areas: staying power, growth in number of employees, increase in sales, innovativeness of product or service offered, response to adversity, and evidence of contributions to the community. The award honors the memory of Mel Bedwell, who was known for his energy, determination, ingenuity, honesty, enthusiasm and loyalty — all traits necessary for a successful small business owner.

Individual tickets are $25; corporate tables of six are $175. Member businesses that would like to use admission credits should call the chamber office at 423-472-6587 to register.
