From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Kaitlin Gebby reports: A face mask policy is returning to Cleveland State Community College for all students and staff on campus, regardless of vaccine status.

The new policy will go into effect today, and comes as local cases of COVID-19 are rising with other campuses in Tennessee reacting with similar measures.

Cleveland State is continuing classes this semester in three formats, in-person, hybrid, or fully online.

Cleveland State President Dr. Bill Seymour said the format students enrolled in this year was their choice, but accommodations will be made for people who test positive or are exposed and need to quarantine.

Seymour said he had hoped the campus would not have to return under these guidelines, but the uptick in local cases and transmissibility of the delta variant required action.

The college is encouraging students to follow hygiene recommendations in addition to mask-wearing, like hand-washing, using sanitizer, and social distancing, but they’re also encouraging anyone who is unvaccinated to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Allen Mincey reports: Construction work on upgrading gas lines along and in Sgt. Paul Huff Parkway will begin Aug. 16. Project coordinators realize   it will create a change to the normal traffic flow on the busy thoroughfare, but it is needed to continue to provide for the growth in the area.

Paul Leath, regional director for Chattanooga Gas, recently spoke with the Cleveland Daily Banner about the upcoming construction work, and what motorists who travel on the roadway will experience … and why the construction is necessary.

Leath said  engineers began pinpointing areas that would need addressing back in 2018, with Paul Huff Parkway being one of those corridors   noted. Growth since then has led to it being pushed even more to the forefront than  before.

Until then, there will be some work done on the busy roadway, but Chattanooga Gas and its contractor will perform this work during two daily phases to minimize the traffic disruption.

The work on the stretch of Paul Huff Parkway from Georgetown Road to Frontage Road will be done in the shoulder of the roadway, so traffic will be affected, but not drastically. However, the stretch from Frontage Road to the entrance to Bradley Square Mall will be done in the center lane of traffic, or what many will know as the turn lane of traffic.

That will actually be done in the evening, with the actual work hours for that to be from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., though crews will be in a mobilizing position, ready to work, around 9 p.m.

The project should be complete by March or April of next year.

From WRCB Channel 3…

TWRA Officers are investigating after a 3-year-old boy fell from a boat into the water at Tellico Lake on Friday.

Two adults from Madisonville and two juveniles were traveling from Sequoyah Landing Marina to Razor landing where they were camping.

While preparing their boat for anchoring the two adults realized the 3-year-old was missing.

They immediately started looking for the child with the help of others who heard the calls.

The child was found unresponsive without a lifejacket in five feet of water, the local fire department and Monroe County EMS administered CPR.

The child was then transported to Sweetwater Hospital where he later died.

This is the 15th boating related fatality in Tennessee this year.
