In news today…

As classes resume in the Cleveland City school system, COVID-19 case numbers continue to rise. The local school system did not hold classes on Thursday and Friday of last week due to the number of students and staff who were absent due to COVID-19 and other illness.

Prior to the school closure, the school system reported 91 active cases last Wednesday. As classes resumed Monday morning, school system officials reported a total of 96 active cases.

During the two-day closure, remote learning was not an option available to the school system. The state now allows for schools and classrooms to utilize remote learning if necessary, but does not permit a school system in its entirety to utilize remote learning. Further discussion regarding remote learning are currently taking place at the state level.

Director of Schools Dr. Russell Dyer continues to request everyone to wear masks when in school buildings, and if able, to consider the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will halt all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways for the Labor Day holiday travel period.  Construction crews will stop all lane closure activity at noon on Friday, September 3rd, until 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7th. This will provide maximum roadway capacity for motorists traveling during the busy Labor Day holiday.

While lane closure activity will be stopped, workers will still be on-site in many construction zones, and drivers are urged to obey posted speed limits.  Drivers convicted of speeding in work zones where workers are present face a fine of $250 to $500, plus court fees and possible increased insurance premiums.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) says it’s investigating after a female inmate died “from apparent complications” of COVID-19 while in custody at the Silverdale Detention Center.

HCSO spokesman Matt Lea says 30-year-old Morghan Jean Elmore passed away on Monday at a local hospital.

He later clarified that Elmore gave birth to a child shortly before her death. That child is now in the custody of the Department of Children’s Services.

Lea says Chattanooga Police officers arrested Elmore on August 13th.

He says she was taken to a local hospital on August 21st.

Lea says the Hamilton County District Attorney’s Office has asked the HCSO Criminal Investigation Division to conduct an investigation.
