Kaitlin Gebby reports: Local churches, nonprofits and some charitable residents are offering assistance to students out of school this week and in need of a meal.

Cleveland City Schools announced Wednesday morning it would be closed Thursday and Friday due to staffing issues related to COVID-19. They also announced their typical meal services would not operate during the closure, meaning students who rely on school meals do not have access to them.

In lieu of school-provided breakfast and lunch, Cleveland City Schools students out of the classroom this Thursday and Friday can head to these locations to get what they need:

For a hot meal, people can head to New Life Bible College, at 155 S. Ocoee St., where lunch is served Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m. and is available to anyone; Salvation Army, at 437 Inman St., for a weekend meal pickup program available to anyone.

The Salvation Army serves carryout lunch noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, breakfast on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and dinner on Sunday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Second Harvest, at 1533 S. Lee Hwy, also serves lunch. There, anyone can get lunch Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to noon, and a hot meal on Saturday at 5 p.m. until food runs out.  For more information visit https://www.loc8nearme.com/tennessee/cleveland/second-harvest-thrift-store/5325289/

For food-pantry pickup, adults are required to be present and ID is required in most cases. Parents can pick up food at:

Faith Memorial Church, located at 910 17th St. NW, where a food pantry on Tuesdays and Thursdays offers groceries from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A photo ID and proof of income are required.

First Baptist Church Cleveland, at 1275 Stuart Road NE, offers a food pantry Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon, offering bulk bags of groceries to take home. Adult pickup only; ID is required.

The Caring Place, at 130 Wildwood Ave., also has a food pantry open, 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday. No ID is required, but an adult or parent must be present for pickup.

Wesley United Methodist, located at 3405 Peerless Road, offers food pantry pickup, 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Thursdays. Adults must be present, and it’s limited to one package per household, per month.

Tim Siniard reports: Effective next month, Tennova Healthcare-Cleveland will implement routine COVID-19 testings for unvaccinated employees and contract workers, according to a letter penned by JT Barnhart, CEO of the local hospital.

Dated Aug. 18, the communiqué was sent to “hospital and clinic staff, employed providers and individuals under contract or arrangement, including students and volunteers.”

Testing will begin on Sept. 6.

Barnhart’s message did not rule out instituting a vaccine requirement at a future date. In addition, it arrived to employees and other hospital workers just as patients with COVID-19 are inundating the hospital. The majority of them are unvaccinated.

A fire at Silverdale Detention Center sent a Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office corrections employee to the hospital on Wednesday.

The incident happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. at the facility on Standifer Gap Road.

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Matt Lea says a small fire broke out in a holding cell of the booking area.

Lea says corrections employees used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames and called the Chattanooga Fire Department as a precaution.

Lea says a corrections employee was taken to a local hospital for medical review. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
