Thursday morning, Bradley County school bus #16 was involved in a crash on Brymer Creek Road around 7:00 a.m.
According to a spokesperson with Bradley County’s school system, the bus driver was dodging a deer that darted out in front of the bus. She was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured.
In a post on the Bradley County Schools’ Facebook page, they said there are no major injuries, only minor scrapes.
The students were en route to Black Fox, Lake Forest and Bradley Central schools.
A second bus was sent to pick up the students to take them to their schools.
The Athens, Tennessee Police Department said an 18-year-old was arrested for a deadly shooting that happened in the area of Walthall Street on Wednesday evening.
Around 5:30 p.m., Athens police officers were dispatched to the area of Walthall Street in reference to the sound of gunshots being fired.Upon arrival, a male who appeared to have been shot was found lying in the grassy area next to basketball courts.
Medical personnel and members of the Athens Fire Department arrived and rendered medical aid, but the man died at the scene.
The victim was identified as 21-year-old Zavion Ferguson of Athens.
Officers worked throughout the night, resulting in 18-year-old Logan Rowe’s arrest.
Rowe was turned over to the McMinn County Jail and charged with second-degree murder.

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office to promoteMotorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Agencies participate by providing information and increasing awareness in their communities about the importance of sharing the road and looking twice for motorcyclists.
Here are a few safe driving tips to prevent crashing with a motorcycle:
- Though a motorcycle is a small vehicle, its operator still has all the rights of the road as any other motorist. Allow the motorcycle the full width of a lane at all times.
- Always signal when changing lanes or merging with traffic.
- If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful. Motorcycle signals are often non-canceling. Always ensure that the motorcycle is turning before proceeding.
- Check all mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles before changing lanes or merging with traffic, especially at intersections.
- Always allow ample follow distance – three to four seconds – when driving behind a motorcycle. This gives riders more time to maneuver or stop in an emergency.
According to preliminary data provided by Tennessee’s Integrated Traffic Analysis Network (TITAN), there were 2,670 motorcycle crashes statewide last year. Of those crashes, 151 were fatal. For more information, please visit www.tntrafficsafety.org.
