From WRCB Channel 3…

Fire officials in Bradley County believe a lightning strike is to blame for a massive fire at a commercial building off Waterlevel Highway early Thursday morning following a night of storms. The smell of smoke, the sound of sirens and the glow of flames gave residents a rude awakening.

Neighbors who live nearby told Channel 3 they watched as the old Star Lite Lounge turned J & K Specialty shop burned to the ground.

The call about the incident came in around 7:00 am according to Bradley County Fire Chief Shawn Fairbanks.

The building was a total loss. Several agencies including crews from Chattanooga and Polk County assisted in getting the flames under control.

No one was injured in the fire. We’re told the owners are currently out of town but have been notified and they did confirm the power inside the building was turned off when the incident happened.

From the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

A federal grand jury indicted a Cleveland, Tennessee, man charged with participating in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6 in Washington, D.C., on 12 charges, according to federal court documents filed last week.

Joseph Lino “Jose” Padilla, 40, originally faced six charges upon his arrest involving assaulting a police officer and throwing a flagpole during the riot.

Padilla, who was honorably discharged from the Tennessee National Guard in 2012, was arrested by the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 23 after people who recognized him tipped off the FBI.

His new charges include:

  • Assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers.
  • Civil disorder (three counts).
  • Assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon (two counts).
  • Obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting.
  • Entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
  • Disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
  • Engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
  • Disorderly conduct in the Capitol grounds or buildings.
  • Act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings.

Since his arrest, prosecutors have argued Padilla should not be granted pre-trial release because he “poses a clear danger to our republic.” They point to his actions — documented in videos — and his own social media statements made on Jan. 6 and the days that followed to support their argument.
