From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Kaitlin Gebby reports: Tennessee recently measured as the highest state per capita next to Ohio in cases of COVID-19 infections.

A chart shared on social media by Eric Topol, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, showed the two states had more than 1,000 COVID-19 cases per million, the highest rate in the country.

In a related development, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist — a Tennessee Republican who is a heart and transplant surgeon — has joined the medical community in calling on Gov. Bill Lee to move to a statewide mask mandate. Currently, under Lee’s authority, counties in Tennessee are still being allowed to make their own decisions regarding such a requirement.

In Bradley County, Mayor D. Gary Davis continues to urge community residents to remember — and to abide by — COVID-19 guidelines which includes the wearing of face masks in public. However, he has stopped short of a public mandate. He also continues to urge local residents to maintain the six-foot social distancing, avoid large crowds and to wash their hands regularly or use sanitizer.

With the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arriving in the Tennessee Valley, CHI Memorial announced their plans to vaccinate their first front-line medical workers Thursday afternoon.

Seventy-four of Tennessee’s will receive their first shipments of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine Thursday, marking the first step toward ending the pandemic.

All healthcare workers who deal with patients who might or do have COVID-19 are eligible to receive the vaccine from the first shipments, according to Vanderbilt’s Dr. William Schaffner.

Currently, about 56,000 doses of Pfizer’s vaccine are in Tennessee and will be distributed to 28 sites covering those 74 hospitals.
