The Cleveland City Council met yesterday.

During the meeting, Vice Mayor Avery Johnson made headlines after announcing he will retire after the second meeting in May. Johnson has been the Vice Mayor for the past 22 years.

Cleveland Mayor Kevin Brooks presented a proclamation recognizing Cleveland as the hot slaw capital of the state. The upcoming Hot Slaw and Art Ya’ll Festival takes place on April 6th in Downtown Cleveland.

City Manager Joe Fivas gave an update to Council members on several projects and agenda items.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the latest leg of the Cleveland Greenway will take place on March 28th at 1:15 p.m. at the new Trailhead on Candies Lane. Citizens will now have about 2.6 miles of continuous walking in the Candies Lane area.

Fivas also announced that the city has received approval from the Tennessee Department of Transportation to bring the Greenway up and under I-75. Eventually, that section of the Greenway will connect with Fletcher Park. Once the project is complete, it will almost double the mileage of the Greenway as it stands today, giving citizens around 10 miles of walking trails.

Fivas also said the city will begin paving Dalton Pike and Wildwood Ave. this spring.

The city is also moving forward with the bidding process for the Peerless Road and Paul Huff intersection. Fivas said Paul Huff Parkway will be entirely paved this summer.

Fivas also gave an update on the Inman Street project. He said even with all the rain, the city is still making good progress.

The council voted unanimously to approve an agreement with Cleveland High School to allow the school to use Tinsley Park tennis courts for the tennis team’s practices.

The council also passed a motion with two options of an agreement for the acquisition of the 270 Inman Street property. The county commission will need to consider both proposals.

It was also announced that city offices will be closed this Friday, in observance of Good Friday. The next Cleveland City Council meeting will be held on Monday, April 8th.
