The Bradley County Planning Commission met yesterday.

The meeting was attended by both supporters and opponents of the SPCA’s bid to acquire the old Waterville Elementary School property for a new facility.

Despite the SPCA’s previous successful bid of $150,000 for the 5.65-acre surplus county property, the rezoning request from residential to commercial to accommodate an animal shelter has been a hotly contested issue over the past few weeks.

Opponents raised concerns about potential negative impacts on property values, water quality, and noise issues. They also collected approximately 400 signatures from neighbors who objected to having an animal shelter in their vicinity.

In contrast, supporters of the SPCA argued in favor of the necessity and benefits of the proposed facility. They highlighted the SPCA’s commitment to adhering to regulations and addressing community concerns

After presentations from both sides, the Planning Commission ultimately recommended the denial of the rezoning request in a 2-6 vote. The matter will now move to the Bradley County Commission for a final decision.
