The Bradley County Commission met yesterday for a voting session.

The Commission did not approve the SPCA’s rezoning request for a new animal control facility, with the vote ending in a tie. It would have taken 8 votes of the 14-member commission to pass the rezoning request.

The request aimed to rezone residential property for commercial use on the site of the old Waterville School. Last month, the Planning Commission voted to not recommend the request to the County Commission.

This decision follows opposition from some residents citing concerns about property values, water pollution, and noise.

Proponents of the shelter say the SPCA had plans to properly maintain the facility and that worries about water quality were unfounded.

WCLE’s Ryan Felton was able to speak to several people after the meeting to get their take on the vote.

3rd District Commissioner Milan Blake put forth a Resolution authorizing the Hiwassee Utilities Commission of Bradley and McMinn Counties to negotiate and purchase property on Chatata Valley Road in Charleston. The purchase would make Bradley County the titled owner of the property to be held in trust for the Hiwassee Utilities Commission.

1ST District Commissioner, Mike Hughes introduced a Resolution authorizing Bradley County Mayor Gary Davis to execute an amendment extending the interlocal agreement with the City of Charleston for property and records management services.

The Commission will next meet for a Work Session on April 22nd, at 7 PM.
