It is almost second nature to most Bradley County residents to drive down Cleveland’s Keith Street and take a quick glance to the right or left to see what might be on those big screens in front of the Village Green Town Center.
Now, that area landmark is about to provide a larger and clearer picture with what is being termed “a futuristic upgrade.”
Will Jones, vice president of Jones Properties, announced this week that the “Jones-a-Tron” video screens, which have been a highlight of the Village Green Town Center for 17 years, will be replaced later this summer with larger screens that offer the clearest high-definition quality available when viewing from a distance.
Jones revealed that the new screens, which measure 9 feet high and 20 feet across, will be installed in June. A special unveiling will be scheduled for the public with Mayor Tom Rowland and other city and county officials expected to attend.
The screens were originally intended to display news bulletins for the community, along with the weather and temperature.
As time went by, fans nicknamed it “Jones-a-Tron” — the name that was eventually adopted.
Jones expects that when the new “Jones-a-Tron” is finally revealed there will inevitably be comparisons to New York’s Times Square.

Gas prices last week rose to a 19-month high as oil prices jumped by more than $6 a barrel over the past couple of weeks.
The average price of regular gas in Chattanooga increased 2.7 cents per gallon to $2.12 per gallon, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 170 gas outlets in Chattanooga. Local gas prices have risen 14.3 cents per gallon in the past month and are up 22 cents a gallon, or more than 10 percent, from the same time a year ago.
For the first time this year, no service stations in the Chattanooga area are still selling gas below $2 a gallon with the cheapest prices available in the region today at $2.02 per gallon at a Citgo station in Middle Valley.
But GasBuddy.com surveys show Chattanooga gas prices are still 28 cents per gallon below the U.S. average of $2.40 per gallon. Chattanooga gas prices also are lower than other mid-South markets.

The person who bought the winning Powerball ticket in Chattanooga is about to be $150,000 richer.
Tennessee Lottery officials said the player won by matching 4 of the 5 white numbers drawn and the red Powerball number on Saturday.
They also said the person added the “Power Play” option for an extra dollar. That tripled the base prize of $50,000.
Another winning ticket worth $50,000 was sold in Franklin.
More information about the winners will be released once they claim their prizes.
