One man is hospitalized and another is behind bars after a shot was fired in an Etowah, Tennessee, alley among a group of people, injuring one man Monday.
Steve Austin Shadden, 43, is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and reckless endangerment, according to Etowah authorities. The victim, whose identity has not been released, is being treated at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
According to a news release from the Etowah Police Department, officers answered a call from the 10th Street area around 10:30 a.m. Monday. A resident reported seeing three men standing in an alley, one of them armed with a handgun.
The resident reported hearing a gunshot and seeing people running from the scene, but after Etowah police searched the area there was no evidence of anyone being shot, authorities said.
Then around 1:30 p.m., a resident at a home on County Road 530 called and reported a “male gunshot victim,” the release said. That victim was last listed in stable condition at the Knoxville hospital, police said.
During his initial appearance Tuesday, Shadden asked for time to obtain his own lawyer, General Sessions Court officials said Wednesday. His next court appearance is set for Aug. 4.

The Hamilton County Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to appoint Joan Carter, widow of Rep. Mike Carter, to serve in his Tennessee House of Representatives seat until the conclusion of a special election called by the governor.
All nine members of the commission voted in favor of appointing Joan Carter to her husband’s seat temporarily, until a new interim representative is elected in September to fill the District 29 seat left vacant when Mike Carter died in May.
While the Legislature is not in session, nominating Commissioner Sabrena Smedley said Wednesday the appointment serves as an honor to the late representative.

Pettyjohn, a Chattanooga businessman and close friend of Hoffa, was fatally shot in 1979 in downtown Chattanooga after testifying before a federal grand jury during the early phases of Tennessee’s notorious “cash-for-clemency” scandal.

Planning for the American Cancer Society 2021 Cleveland Bradley Relay for Life is underway with the Relay scheduled from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 28 at the Greenway Park on Raider Drive.
This year’s theme is RRTV, Retro Relay TV, and will pay homage to classic TV shows via Relay Teams and Sponsors. Teams are encouraged to dress as their favorite TV character and convey the show’s theme throughout their campsite at the Relay.
The purpose of the Relay for Life is to raise funds to support research, improve cancer survival, and much more.
The goal of this year’s Relay is to raise $75,000 with all funds used to advance the American Cancer Society Mission to free the world from cancer through research, supporting patients, and spreading the word about prevention.
