Tim Siniard reports: When the doors of Ocoee Dam 3’s spillways lifted Friday, there was a trickle of water downriver at first. Then the flow increased into a steady stream, transforming the rock strewn river bed of the Ocoee River into a whitewater wonder.
Next, the competitors appeared — convening from all over the world to compete in the event, which is being held for the second year in the world-class Olympic venue.
They were there to compete in the Ocoee River Championships — a three-day annual whitewater competition held at the former venue for the 1996 Summer Olympics, in Polk County.
The event also drew scores of spectators who dotted the shoreline to watch some 150 athletes navigate the rapids of what is considered one of the best whitewater runs in the nation.
The event was sponsored by the Ocoee River Basin Foundation.

Tim Siniard reports: Three local leaders attended a ceremonial bill signing this week in Nashville where Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee marked the enactment of a new law prohibiting the use of vaping products in certain areas where children are often present.
The ceremony was attended by the law’s sponsors, state Sen. Todd Gardenhire (R-Chattanooga) and state Rep. Dan Howell (R-Georgetown). Also attending were Bradley County School Director Dr. Linda Cash and Bradley County School Board Chairman Troy Weathers.
The legislation, which was passed and signed earlier this year, expands the definition of vapor products to include visible or nonvisible vapors and the substances used to fill a vapor cartridge.
Gardenhire said the legislation is a “step in the right direction.’

Tennessee authorities say a boat exploded causing a fire at a marina on Kentucky Lake.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said the boat explosion and fire was reported Sunday at Leatherwood Marina in Stewart County.
One person was injured and airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville and four houseboats sank due to the blaze.
The blaze has been extinguished, but authorities say boaters should stay clear of the area due to debris.
