The Bradley County Sheriff Office is conducting a death investigation in the case of missing person Curtis Kapteina.
Mr. Kapteina’s body was found in a wooded area near his residence around 10:30 AM Monday morning.
Members of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, the Bradley County Medical Examiner, and Sheriff Steve Lawson were on the scene.
Also in news today…
Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm a weapons and contraband sweep of the jail was conducted by a multi-agency force at the Bradley County Jail.
Keeping with his commitment during the campaign, Sheriff Steve Lawson began Day One in office by working to better secure the jail for the protection of Corrections personnel and inmates alike. Sweeping the jail for weapons and contraband materials is a significant first step in achieving that goal.
During the sweep a number of items were seized. Razors, a shank, medication, matches, lighters, a case of Hooch (homemade alcohol), and a tattoo gun.
District Attorney Steve Crump stated that his office will be reviewing the evidence collected, and will determine proper charges against the offending inmates.

All but one of the six death cases from the Nov. 21, 2016, crash on Talley Road that involved 37 Woodmore Elementary School children have been settled.
Jasmine Mateen and her husband, Qadir Mateen, received a “good and valuable” consideration from Durham School Services on July 26 for the death of 6-year-old Zyaira Mateen, according to records in Hamilton County Circuit Cour
Those records do not disclose a settlement amount, or include separate claims for Mateen and her two children who survived the crash but sustained traumatic brain injuries and emotional suffering. Those claims are pending.
Though it does not comment on pending cases, court records show Durham also settled a wrongful death case in May with Demetrius Wilson, whose 8-year-old son, Keonte Wilson, died in the crash. There is only one more pending death case for 9-year-old Cor’Dayja Jones.

New Bradley County commissioners will be sworn in in a ceremony that begins at 9 o’clock this morning at the Bradley county courthouse. The event is scheduled to be held outdoors, and will see the swearing in of new commissioners Tim mason, Erica Davis, Dennis Epperson, and Kevin Raper. The public is invited to attend.
