Charleston mayor Walter Goode died on Sunday night. Goode has served as mayor of Charleston since 2002. He was on the Charleston City Commission from 1986 until 1996, rejoining the commission in 2002 when he became mayor at that time. In news today…

Cleveland City Schools is enrolling new and returning students for the 2020-2021 school year. The deadline to complete online enrollment will be Thursday, July 23, 2020. Instructions and links for families may be found at www.clevelandschools.org/enrollment.

Cleveland City Schools plans to open school in a traditional, in-person format starting on August 10th with Reconnection Week. Students will attend a full day of school on one of the first four days (August 10-13) according to their family’s last name (Monday: A-D; Tuesday: E-L; Wednesday: M-Q; Thursday: R-Z). All students enrolled in traditional, in-person school will attend an abbreviated day of school on Friday, August 14. On Monday, August 17, all enrolled students will attend school and follow the updated 2020-2021 academic calendar. If a school or the district closes due to COVID-19, Cleveland City Schools will continue with academic work and instructional support with traditional, at-home learning.

A pair of collegiate construction projects continue to grow toward 2021 openings in Cleveland and Athens, Tennessee. Cleveland State Community College’s (CSCC) Health and Science Center, located on its main campus in Cleveland, Tennessee and the McMinn Higher Education Center (MHEC) in Athens, Tennessee are both on schedule to offer classes beginning next year. The MHEC is the future home for CSCC’s Athens Center, Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Athens, and the University of Tennessee Extension offices.

The Health and Science Center (53,000-square feet) and the MHEC (52,000-square feet) are being constructed by BarberMcMurry Architects and Rouse Construction Company, respectively. The Health and Science Center is located at the corner of Adkisson Drive and Norman Chapel Road in Cleveland. The MHEC is located at the corner of George R. Price Boulevard and Denso Drive in Athens, Tennessee.

The Health and Science Center will be home to the college’s nursing, medical assisting, paramedic and other health-related degree and certificate programs. Features will include a Medical Assisting skills lab, Paramedic and EMT skills labs with ambulance simulators and a nursing lab designed to look like a hospital emergency room. Other features include a microbiology lab, two biology labs, five general-purpose classrooms, a large multi-function classroom with retractable auditorium seating, a computer lab, a student lounge, faculty offices and more.

The Bradley County Commission met on Monday, where Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis reiterated that he does not intend to mandate masks in Bradley County, but strongly advises them, as well as social distancing and small gathering sizes. Also at the meeting, Commissioner Charlotte Peak spoke on the Building and Land committees update for the work at Lake Forest and Waterville Elementary Schools. She said the work is almost complete. 

Mayor Davis and multiple commissioners offered their condolences and prayers to the family of Charleston mayor Goode, who passed away on Sunday.
