From our partners at Local 3 News: The Tennessee Comptrollers Office reports 8 repeated findings in Polk County’s annual audit report for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2023.

Auditors found “material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, and areas of noncompliance within the county government.”

For the last 12 annual audits, the Grundy County Highway Department’s funds were found to be maintained by just highway department personnel.

However, under the Fiscal Control Acts of 1957, the director of accounts and budget should maintain the accounting record for funds administered by both the county executive and the highway superintendent.

Several more findings of purchasing deficiencies, accounting deficiencies, and failure to hold spending to the limits authorized by the county commission were also discovered at the Office of Director of Schools.

The comptroller report says auditors made adjustments to the financial statements in the Highway Department and School Department.

Other findings were related to the Office of Circuit and General Sessions Courts Clerk and the Office of Sheriff.

“For the past two years, Polk County has had several findings that have gone uncorrected,” said Comptroller Mumpower. “County officials have put together corrective plans to remedy these problems. It’s my expectation that county leaders and the audit committee will take the necessary steps to improve financial management in Polk County.”
