A major change in the way inmates are housed in Hamilton County will happen at the end of the year.

This comes as private jail service, CoreCivic, ends its contract with Hamilton County.

Sheriff Jim Hammond has been working hard getting ready for the major transition and Wednesday failed to get the approval from commissioners.

State law allows counties to pay sheriff’s more if they run workhouses, like Silverdale Detention Center.

With less than two months before the sheriff assumes responsibilities of Silverdale, his request to be compensated for the extra duty was denied.

Last week, Hammond pointed out to commissioners sheriff’s in Knox and Davidson counties, who also manage workhouses, are compensated more.

Despite the failed request, focus remains inside the Silverdale gates, making sure the center can handle the transition.

Documents obtained by Channel 3 show the sheriff’s office is working on making more than $1 million in repairs and upgrades to the aging facility, including repairs in sewer lines, roofs and fire alarms.

They are also working on moving booking, clerk and magistrate operations that are currently. housed downtown.

Hamilton County will take over operations on December 31st.

The sheriff said that is the same day the jail downtown is slated to close and all inmates will be moved to Silverdale Detention Center.

From WDEF Channel 12…

3,045,401 Tennesseans voted in this year’s Presidential election.

That is 68% of registered voters.

The total includes early voting, absentee voting and in-person voting on November 3rd.

The number easily beat the previous high voter turnout from 2008 in President Obama’s first race.

Tennessee also broke the early voting and absentee records this election.

Counties are required to report their certified results by next Monday.

But none of the big races are in doubt in Tennessee.
