From Fox 17 in Nashville: After announcing his retirement from congress, two weeks later, Tennessee U.S. Rep. Mark Green officially announced he will run for a fourth term.

On Thursday, Green’s office said the congressman has decided to run for reelection. Green originally pointed to the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas among the reasons for his decision to step down.

Now, Green says after calls from constituents asking him to reconsider his retirement, he has changed his tune.

Congressman Green released the following statement:

“While my strong desire was to leave Congress at the end of this year, since my announcement, I have received countless calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider. I was reminded of the words of General MacArthur on a statue at West Point: ‘Duty, honor, country.’ I realized, once again: I had a duty to my country to fulfill. I will be running for re-election so I can be here on Day 1 next year to help President Trump end this border crisis once and for all.”

Green flirted with running for governor in 2017, but suspended his campaign after he was nominated by former President Donald Trump to become the Army secretary. He later withdrew his nomination.

In 2022, Green’s middle Tennessee congressional seat was among seats that Republicans drastically carved up during redistricting. Those congressional maps are now facing a federal lawsuit, but that case isn’t scheduled to go to trial until April 2025.
