The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports concerning individuals going door-to-door posing as employees of the health department and presenting fake identification. They go on to explain the purpose of their visit is related to COVID-19. The person then proceeds to ask detailed health questions, including asking for social security numbers.

THIS IS A SCAM.  The health department will only contact individuals regarding COVID-19 during a case investigation, or to conduct contact tracing.  They will never visit your home in person, they will only call, and they will never ask for your social security number.

When in doubt, never provide sensitive information over the phone or in person.

Local law enforcement is aware of this scam, and an open investigation is ongoing.

Tim Siniard reports: A man was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for downloading child pornography at a Cleveland Starbucks.

The man, Albert Todd Taylor, was also ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution to a group that works with child-pornography victims.

He was sentenced in a Chattanooga federal court on Friday.

The downloads reportedly took place from November 2018 to July 2019, according to a federal grand jury indictment from earlier this year.

According to a plea agreement filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Taylor had a prior conviction for possession of child pornography and faced a minimum term of 10 years and a maximum of 20 years.

The case unfolded after an FBI agent received a tip that someone was downloading child pornography “from a certain IP address” associated with a local Starbucks.

As detailed in the plea agreement, “The officer made several trips to see if he could identify the person at Starbucks during the downloads, and he ultimately identified the person.”

The officer approached the defendant, who admitted he had been downloading child pornography. According to the plea agreement, Taylor gave the officer the digital tablet he was using, which contained “numerous images of child pornography,” according to the court document.

At the time, Taylor was on federal probation for a prior federal conviction for possession of child pornography, according to a federal court document.

From the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

Tennessee leads the nation in COVID-19 cases per capita since the start of the pandemic — as well as new cases over the past week — placing it at the center of the current coronavirus surge in the U.S.

As of Tuesday, Tennessee averaged 160 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past week, according to a state-by-state data analysis from The New York Times. That’s a 78% increase in cases over 14 days.

The Times lists Sequatchie, McMinn and Bledsoe counties among the top 10 counties in the nation, averaging the most new daily cases per capita.

Neighboring Kentucky saw the second-highest number of new daily cases per capita in the past week, with an average of 118 new daily cases per 100,000 residents in the last seven days.

By comparison, the U.S. as a whole averaged 52 new daily cases per 100,000 residents in the same time period.

Much of Tennessee’s current case surge can be attributed to a record-high number of new childhood cases. Experts blame the highly contagious delta variant, combined with low COVID-19 vaccination rates. They also cite a return to in-person activities, such as school, without protective measures, such as face masks.
