From Local 3 News: With the spring season drawing close, officials with the Cherokee National Forest will hold prescribed fire open houses for both Ocoee and Tellico Ranger Districts.

 

The U.S. Forest Service explains that prescribed fires are generally low-intensity fires, set by by trained personnel to improve wildlife habitat, increase forest diversity and remove excess fuels which could contribute to wildfires.

 

The fires are implemented with a burn plan that identify specific weather, smoke, and other environmental conditions to meet resource objectives while minimizing impacts to the public.

 

The Ocoee Ranger District open house is scheduled for February 22, at the Boys and Girls Club Sutton-Hooker Unit Gym in Benton from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The Boys and Girls Club Sutton-Hooker Unit is located at 280 Campbell Road, Benton, TN.

The Tellico Ranger District open house is scheduled for February 29 at the Tellico Community Center in Tellico Plains from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The Tellico Community Center is located at 132 Bank Street, Tellico Plains, TN.
