The Emergency 911 Communications Center is set up to help people in emergencies, but what if that dilemma strikes the present Guthrie Drive center?

That is why 911 board of directors members have agreed to an updated backup site, just in case. That backup center will become operational within the next couple of months, according to Cleveland/Bradley County Emergency Management Agency Director Troy Spence.

Spence said there is a definite need for a backup site, and mentioned two recent situations, one in which the phone system went down at the current center and a second when tornadoes struck the area and were making a line straight to the present 911 building.

The backup center will be located at the Cleveland Police Department building on Church Street, which Spence said has all the capabilities to house the communications center.

Spence said there are six computer systems set up at the center for dispatchers, so they could not only be used in case there are problems at the current center, but can be used at the same time to give the area even more emergency dispatch capabilities than ever. However, the main purpose of the backup site is to serve as a place that can be used should the Guthrie Drive center not be operational.

Plans to celebrate Cleveland’s 175th anniversary are moving steadily ahead, but slowly.

The city’s Anniversary Committee met Wednesday at the municipal building to confirm the date and time for a communitywide ice cream social on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5. This event, from 2 to 5 p.m., will be free to the public and be held at the Greenway Pavilion near Raider Drive. It will include cake and ice cream and a short welcoming program.

Some key members of the planning committee were unable to attend Wednesday’s meeting, and planning for a sit-down meal for federal, state, and local officials has yet to be finalized.

The event, the key attraction for the city’s 175th birthday since it was chartered as the county seat of Bradley County on Feb. 4, 1842, will be determined by the availability of Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam. It is anticipated the governor will be the main invitee, along with U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker.

The Sunday afternoon birthday party in early November will include a number of treats focused on cake and ice cream. There will also be activities for children, the presentation of a number of door prizes, and possibly the planting of a commemorative tree in conjunction with the Cleveland Shade Tree Board.

The tree planting, and an associated plaque, could be held earlier, or even at the time of the sit-down meal.

It’s anticipated there will be musical entertainment at both events, and the committee is hoping to involve the Cleveland Pops, the Voices of Lee, and perhaps others.
