From NewsChannel 9: A family in Rhea County is mourning the death of a 7-year-old boy, who died from a gunshot wound.

We’re working to learn more details about exactly what happened.

Rhea County Sheriff’s Office Detective Rocky Potter says the incident happened at about 5 p.m.

Someone called 911 about a gun discharged inside of a home on Upper Fine Lane in Dayton, not far from Highway 27.

Potter says after the boy was shot, family members rushed him to Rhea County Medical Center in their own vehicle, where he was stabilized.

An ambulance then rushed him to Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, where he died the next afternoon.

His family says the second grader loved football and played for the Dayton little Eagles.

We are in touch with both law enforcement and family members about this story.
