The Cleveland City Board of Education met on Tuesday. Mayor Kevin Brooks was present and held the swearing in of two re-elected board members – Krista McKay and Carolyn Ingram – as well as one newly elected board member – Nate Tucker. Several reports were given during the meeting, including a report on the transition to one principal for Ross Elementary and Yates Primary. The two schools will continue to operate as separate schools for the remainder of the year, but the prospect of merging the two schools may be studied during the second semester of this school year. Dr. Dyer also thanked all employees, especially school nurses, for their work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, a presentation was made regarding current enrollment, with a total of 5,554 students enrolled – 4,487 of which are in traditional in-person classes, while 1,067 are learning online through virtual learning.
USDA funding has been extended until December 31st of this year, which means that ALL children ages 0-18 can receive free breakfast and lunch. These children do NOT have to be a student in Cleveland City Schools. Meals can be picked up between 9-10AM at any school on days schools are open.
In addition, it was reported that face masks and one-way hallways have been implemented in schools, with mostly positive feedback. Students are found much more likely to cooperate with these new rules when it is explained to them the reasoning behind the rules, rather than just the fact that these are rules.

First responders from the Chattanooga Fire Department sprung into action Monday night after reports of a man in the Tennessee River.
CFD’s Fireboat 1 along with other units and Chattanooga police were spread out about 10:45pm along the shoreline in an effort to locate the man according to Chattanooga Fire Department’s Lindsey Rogers.
Fireboat 1 was assigned to check the eastern shoreline from Main Street south to the Chattanooga Creek and were able to find the man in the water around 11:25 PM using a searchlight. The man was located on the north bank of the Tennessee River, but still in the water. A throw rope was used to retrieve him and bring him aboard the boat.
Once the rescue crews re-convened at Ross’s Landing, the 45-year-old man met with TWRA and HCEMS, but he refused treatment from paramedics.
It’s not clear how the man ended up in the river.

The Tennessee Department of Education says the launch of their anticipated online dashboard to track COVID-19 cases in schools across the state has been delayed.
TDOE officials say this is because of technical difficulties with processing data across a number of school districts.
The department announced the dashboard last week amid deep criticism about their transparency when it comes to the virus in schools. State officials said the dashboard will display the number of new positive COVID-19 cases among students and staff, amount of schools in remote or in-person learning, if there’s a critical designation for teachers, and more continuous learning links for parents.
Now, the state says they are working to rectify the technical issues, and hope to launch the dashboard before the end of the week. They expect to have full reporting across every district by September 22.
