Tenth District Attorney General Steve Crump says the opioid problem is likely to get worse before it gets better.

The county’s top elected law enforcement official made his projection at a recent gathering of the Cleveland Rotary Club.

He said the number of opioid deaths in Bradley County totals 22, and in most places the number of overdoses are greater than auto fatalities and homicides combined. He pointed out the first goal of the initiative is prosecution. Crump said the idea of treatment has been ignored, and that increased funding for treatment is the only part of his initiative over which he has no control.

He said there would also be increased prosecution of dealers, with the Drug Task Force working specifically in the opioid area. Crump said he is joining with other DAs from across the state to initiate a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical companies that have pleaded guilty to fraudulent advertising.

Metro Nashville Police have responded to a shooting on the campus of Tennessee State University.

Police responded to the call which took place in the Boyd Hall parking lot located at 3500 John A. Merritt Blvd.

Police say the victim was shot in the chest and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in serious condition. The victim is a former student, previously enrolled during the Spring semester, but was not currently a student according to police.

Campus police said during a press conference the victim was a resident at Boyd Hall.

Metro Police are reviewing surveillance video and say the shooter fled the scene after the shooting. There is no threat to students at this time.

Strong thunderstorms and heavy rain moved through the area late yesterday afternoon into the evening hours, pummeling Cleveland and the surrounding area.

During the afternoon storms, torrential rains resulted in some minor flooding. There were also reports of pea-to-dime sized hail, as well as a few power outages around the city.

Periods of heavy rain as well as a few rumbles of thunder continued to make their way through the area into the evening hours.

These storms are blamed for a structure fire that occurred at a residence on Hamill Road in Hixson’s Big Ridge neighborhood, as well as a downed tree that damaged homes on Jarnigan Avenue in North Chattanooga. Downed trees were also reported in Red Bank, Hixson, and other areas of Hamilton County. Power outages were also reported, and WRCB-TV was off the air as a result of these storms throughout the evening and into the night. Some Comcast customers were able to receive programming from WRCB-TV sooner than other providers due to a fiber optic link between WRCB-TV and Comcast.
