A Rhea County, Tennessee, man has been indicted in the death of 34-year-old Bradley County resident Amber Renee Monday, and he now appears to be fighting extradition to Tennessee to face a murder charge and another felony count in her death, officials said.

Guy William O’Connell, 44, is being held in the Douglas County, Kansas, jail on a fugitive-from-justice warrant stemming from his indictment last week on charges of first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse by a Rhea County grand jury, according to prosecutors.

O’Connell has been held since Aug. 25, initially on a fugitive warrant linked to a vehicle theft in Bradley County in the same investigation of Monday’s disappearance, but the more serious charges shift the case from the 10th Judicial District in Bradley to Rhea County in the 12th Judicial District.

O’Connell’s arrest in Kansas came several days before a body later identified as that of the 34-year-old Monday was found in a shallow grave on Dayton Mountain in Rhea County, according to 12th Judicial District Attorney General Mike Taylor.

On Tuesday, Taylor said O’Connell, who initially waived extradition on a Bradley County theft charge, had since withdrawn that waiver on a return trip to court.

In news today…

Detectives with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division issued the following statement to the residents of our county to prevent further auto burglaries and other ensuing crimes.

Over the last few years, there have been multiple auto burglary reports filed with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office with suspects identified as Chattanooga area residents. In a majority of these cases, suspects are burglarizing several vehicles in one night, all of which were left unlocked.

Auto burglary suspects often take firearms out of unlocked vehicles and steal cars with the keys left inside of them. Most of the stolen cars have been recovered in the Chattanooga area.

It has come to our attention that at least one suspect from a recent rash of auto burglaries was arrested in Chattanooga for homicide involving a firearm. Three other suspects from the Chattanooga area were recently arrested in Bradley County when they were caught walking in the area where auto burglaries had been previously reported; all three of whom were armed with handguns. Other auto burglary suspects have also been involved in homicide and firearm related charges in Hamilton County.

In light of these incidents, we strongly urge Bradley County residents to lock their vehicles and to not leave firearms inside of them overnight. We also encourage you to contact law enforcement if you see suspicious activity in your neighborhoods. Do not attempt to confront prowlers or possible burglary suspects on your own.
