A Bradley County man faces aggravated assault charges involving his own mother. Police say Tyler Keller barricaded himself in a bathroom.  Keller held his mom hostage with a knife to her throat.

Sheriff Eric Watson said 32-year-old Tyler Keller is no stranger to his department. Court records show last year Keller was arrested for aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.

He said his department responded to the house on Weatherly Switch Road in Cleveland for a domestic dispute. It quickly escalated to a standoff.

Police negotiated with Keller, before breaking into the bathroom, ending the two-hour standoff.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. Because two juveniles were involved, the Department of Children’s Services was called in to investigate.

The Cleveland City Council will take a look into the future as it prepares its budget for the next fiscal year.

City Manager Joe Fivas told the council at  it its Monday work session that the half-day event will take place Monday, April 9, beginning at 8 a.m. in the council chambers.

Fivas said the meeting will review the city’s strategic plans and provide questionnaires to the council to better gauge their priorities.

He said plans are for the budget to have its first reading and public hearing during the council meeting of April 23rd.

Councilman David May said he had been asked whether the school system might need more funds for campus security needs.

Fivas said there has been no formal requests, but he and Director of Schools Dr. Russell Dyer have agreed to continue discussion as the system better learns what those needs are.

Councilman Bill Estes said there are two elementary schools which need new entrances “right now” to better control access to the buildings.

Fivas also announced another round of community meetings will be held, the first being April 10 at the Museum Center at Five Points.
