In our news today…

To honor his hometown and the Goodfriend legacy in East Tennessee and at Tennessee Wesleyan University, Robert Goodfriend and his wife, Wendy, have pledged a $2 million gift to Tennessee Wesleyan. The gift will support the Tennessee Wesleyan School of Business, helping educate young business men and women and future entrepreneurs.

With this gift, Tennessee Wesleyan plans to fund several new initiatives in the School of Business, working to provide the strongest education for the region’s future businesspeople and entrepreneurs.

The Proud Heritage, Strong Future Campaign at Tennessee Wesleyan University will accelerate change and improvements outlined in the university’s strategic plan. This $16 million campaign has four funding priorities that will help the college attain excellence: annual fund support, student scholarships, academic support, and facility enhancements, including the construction of a new 30,000 square foot campus center. For additional information about how you can support the college during this campaign, please contact the Advancement Office at (423) 746-5330.

Middle school students in Polk County will soon take a giant leap into the technology age.

It was announced at Monday evening’s Polk County Board of Education meeting at Copper Basin High School that the school system has received a $1.25 million technology grant from the Verizon Corporation.

Polk County Director of Schools James Jones was also excited about the grant, giving his secondary administrator credit for discovering the opportunity and following up on the idea. He said approximately 750 middle school students will be affected.

The two-year grant will provide iPads for all of the students, five gigs of data to each student, and something which will be extremely helpful for Bell and his staff — training.

Verizon officials will be coming to Polk County April 5th-6th to formally announce the grant. They will also be working with Bell, Goodman, Jones and others in implementation of the technology funds.

The only concerns expressed at Monday’s meeting is that Verizon may not realize there are a few pockets of non-service for internet providers in Polk County, and some students may be unable to get service at their homes.

From News Channel 9…

The United Christian Church in Cleveland is where Bradley County Republicans will get on a bus today and head to Nashville to hear President Donald Trump speak.

President Trump is scheduled to take the podium at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Music City. And, thanks to a packed charter bus, both Bradley and Hamilton County will be well represented.

But not everybody is supporting the bus trip, or President Trump.

“I don’t think he’s done anything that’s worthwhile,” Carl Brackin, with the Democratic Party of Bradley County said.

He says Bradley County Democrats should join others in Hamilton County who say they plan to protest in Nashville today.

Adam Lewis, Chairman of the Bradley County Republican Party, says protesting is your right as an American.

Both Lewis and Brackin agreed Trump should and will talk about healthcare.
