The Bradley County Commission met Monday night, and Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis introduced the 2019-2020 budget. The number one priority for the Commission, included in the budget, is an increase in employee salaries. The new budget total was estimated around $163 million, with no increase in taxes. The proposed budget will go to the finance committee Thursday for review.

A motion was also made to direct the Commission to publish a Notice of Intent to exceed the certified tax rate. A public hearing will be held as part of the July 8th work session. The motion was passed 9 to 3, with two members absent.

Christy Armstrong reports: For the second year, Junior Achievement of the Ocoee Region has been awarded one of Junior Achievement USA’s highest honors — the 5 Star Award.

This award recognizes the staffs and boards which meet the national organization’s “standards in operational efficiency” and are a “strong representation of the JA brand.”

JA’s Ocoee Region serves 26 schools throughout its five-county service area, which includes Bradley, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe and Polk. This includes 13 schools in Bradley County.

The organization provides programming for students in kindergarten through the 12th grade with lessons on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. Lessons are offered in public school classrooms with the cooperation of area schools and teachers.

Tennessee’s embattled House speaker has announced he’ll resign from his leadership position on Aug. 2 after a vote of no confidence by his Republican caucus amid a scandal over explicit text messages.

The move is unprecedented in Tennessee’s modern political era. The last speaker resignation came in 1931 in the Senate.

House Speaker Glen Casada announced Tuesday that he’s asking Gov. Bill Lee to call lawmakers back for a special legislative session to elect a new speaker on the day he steps down.

Lee has said he would consider calling a session should House leadership ask for one.

Casada has been dogged by calls to resign since it was revealed he exchanged text messages containing sexually explicit language about women with his former chief of staff several years ago, among other controversies.
