From Fox 17 Nashville…

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced his recommendations Tuesday to reopen schools across the state for the 2020-21 school year.

Despite the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the state, the Lee Administration insists that in-person learning is the “medically sound, preferred option.”

145 of 147 school districts in Tennessee have plans to open in-person for this year. However, Commissioner Penny Schwinn said they are still working on the specifics of those plans.

Governor Lee plans to issue Executive Order No. 55 to allow for contact sports to resume if they follow requirements from the TSSAA.

Non-TSSAA schools will be required to follow equivalent guidelines, and non-school-sponsored athletics should follow the Tennessee Pledge guidelines.

Kaitlin Gebby reports: Bradley County has now seen 10 deaths related to COVID-19, the Tennessee Department of Health reports

As of Monday, the state health department confi rmed Bradley County to have 1,492 total confi rmed cases since March, including 508 active cases.

With schools starting next week, just under 0.5% of the county population has active cases of COVID-19. At 1% of the population, according to the Cleveland City Schools back-to-school plan, a district-wide shutdown is in order.

Hospital beds continue to be strained across the state due to COVID-19. According to TDH data, 14% if the state’s ICU beds remain open, and 19% of the state’s non-ICU hospital beds are open for patients.

As of Monday, TDH reported 1,121 individuals were hospitalized in Tennessee for COVID-19 — an all-time high

However, Gov. Bill Lee said he will not follow the advice of the White House COVID-19 Task Force and issue a mask mandate or shut down bars.
