Topping our news today…

At approximately 5:15pm Tuesday, an off duty trooper witnessed an erratic driver traveling north on North Lee Hwy at a dangerous speed. The off duty trooper turned around to follow the driver, but lost contact.

Shortly after, dispatch was informed that the driver’s vehicle had crashed in front of the Russell Cellular Verizon Wireless store on North Lee Hwy. The driver entered the building and discharged multiple rounds from a firearm.

Thankfully, there were no injuries. The driver/shooter has been apprehended and taken into custody by Bradley County Sheriff’s Office deputies on charges involving weapons and DUI. Further charges are pending.

Also in news today…

Cleveland State Community College has announced that enrollment has increased for four semesters in a row. Spring enrollment is up 4.9% over last spring. Also, Cleveland State’s increase over the past four semesters is the largest percent increase among Tennessee Board of Regents Community Colleges.

A Tennessee inmate accused of killing a corrections administrator and escaping prison on a tractor has been indicted on charges including premeditated murder and rape. The indictment obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday charges Curtis Ray Watson on 15 counts in the killing of Tennessee Department of Corrections Administrator Debra Johnson. Authorities say Watson was on regular lawn care duties at West Tennessee State Penitentiary near Henning on August 7th when he sexually assaulted and killed corrections administrator Debra Johnson at her home on the prison grounds. Watson has not entered a plea. An arraignment has been set for February 18th.
