Topping our news today…

On Tuesday morning, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee joined Mix 104-1’s Steve Hartline in the new Mix 104-1 broadcast studio for a live interview regarding several topics including COVID-19. We join part of that interview:

Governor Lee also stated he would not be shutting down schools – that decision will be left to the individual school districts. Also, he does not have any plans to mandate masks statewide. Governor Lee was interviews as part of the opening of the new Mix 104-1 broadcast studios.

In news today…

The Bradley County Commission met on Monday where several reports were given. Candies Lane is now periodically open. Also, Commissioner Hughes reported that multiple E-Mails had been received from parents concerned about the reopening of schools, as well as landfill issues, although some reported improvements with the landfill issues. County Mayor D. Gary Davis also noted that over 280 responses from Bradley County residents who do not have broadband access have been received. Any families who live in Bradley County who do not have access to broadband Internet service in their area should E-Mail broadband@bradleycountytn.gov with their name and address. The next meeting will be August 10th at noon.

At 4:45pm Tuesday the Cleveland Police Department responded to North Lee Highway and Tasso Lane on a juvenile pedestrian and small child struck by a vehicle. Master Patrol Officer J.R. Burnette reported that a vehicle was traveling northbound on North Lee Highway when a female juvenile pedestrian, pushing a stroller with a small child inside, attempted to cross the roadway. The female juvenile and the child were struck by the vehicle. The juvenile and the child were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Facing criticism over state plans not to ask Tennessee school systems for information about coronavirus cases in their facilities — so it can be publicly reported — Gov. Bill Lee said Tuesday his administration is now working on a data strategy that protects privacy.

There have been concerns that some districts won’t share information with parents and the community about what is going on.

A number of districts have already or soon plan to reopen schools for in-person education for students. Hamilton County Schools is set to reopen Aug. 12 using a four-phase response ranging from all-online to in-person education, depending on local coronavirus cases. As of Tuesday, the schools were projecting Phase 3, in which individual campuses are closed as needed to respond to the pandemic. But officials said the case volume indicates a transition toward Phase 2, in which all students alternate on two-day-a-week schedules.

In news today…

Students in the Bradley County School system are returning to school today for their first day of the 2020-2021 school year. Today is an abbreviated day for students. Thursday will be a staff development day, therefore students will not attend. They will return to school on Friday.
