From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Gov. Bill Haslam’s plan to extend broadband access to rural parts of Tennessee passed a milestone Monday night, when the state Senate voted 31-0 for its approval.

The bill will now be heard in the state House Finance, Ways and Means Committee during a hearing.

Under the terms of the bill, broadband internet access would added to the services that a cooperative may provide.

This bill adds that any of the services that may be provided pursuant to the act, including broadband internet access outside the service area of the cooperative, requires the permission of any municipal electric plant or cooperative in whose service area the services will be provided.

For Bradley County, that would mean electric cooperatives such as Volunteer Electric could provide broadband services to their customers and even to customers within the Cleveland Utility service area, should the utility grant their permission.

The idea behind allowing the cooperatives to offer the services is that since cooperatives cover a major portion of the state, they would be in the best position to move more quickly to get the services to customers who are failing to be offered adequate broadband access.

During that time, emergency vehicles will be present on the Lee campus as a part of the exercise.

According to Campbell, the community can expect to see a variety of emergency vehicles on the south of campus, near the School of Nursing.

Impaired driving is a serious crime that kills more than 16,000 people and injures 305,000 others every year in the United States. Deputies will evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Additionally, they will target those who operate a vehicle while impaired, and take corrective actions for other violations observed while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

And finally…

From the EPB Fiber Optics Severe Weather Center, just a reminder that our listening area is under an enhanced to moderate risk of severe weather today. There is a possibility for strong to severe thunderstorms, including damaging straight-line winds and large hail, much like we saw a couple of weeks ago. The possibility of tornadoes cannot be ruled out. As of news time, it appears there may be some thunderstorms moving through this morning, which are not expected to be severe. This afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are expected to redevelop and move through the area. This is when any severe weather is expected. Please stay weather aware and keep your NOAA Weather Radio handy, or have some other means of receiving watches and warnings as the situation unfolds. You may tune to Mix 104-1 for the latest watches and warnings for our area as they become available. Even if only a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, it is still advisable to take cover, as straight-line winds can create the same types of damage and injuries as a tornado.
