The Times Free Press reports- CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The Bradley County Commission will consider at least two proposals for animal control services at its Sept. 28 meeting. On Monday, two proposals were presented by Commissioner Thomas Crye, chairman of an ad hoc committee tasked with exploring animal control service options, for a formal vote. One proposal involved the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office; the other called for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals of Bradley County, the county’s nonprofit animal shelter service provider, to expand its duties to include animal pickup. Instead of voting on the proposals, commissioners voted 13-1 to discuss the matter at their next work session. The cost for employing the sheriff’s office to provide animal control services amounts to $120,000; the estimated cost for the SPCA to handle animal pickup ranges between $100,000 and $110,000. These costs are in addition to a proposed $120,000 annual agreement to retain the animal sheltering service provided by the SPCA, which represents a $40,000 annual increase over its current $80,000 agreement. Commissioner Bill Winters expressed a desire not to limit the upcoming discussion to Crye’s proposals. Comprehensive stray animal pickup is not addressed in either of the two ad hoc committee proposals, except in cases of injured animals or dangerous situations. Times Free Press- CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Cleveland education officials say that, after a series of delays, construction of Raider Arena — Cleveland High School’s new gymnasium — now is projected to be wrapped up by the first week of March 2016. The new gymnasium replaces the high school’s 50-year-old landmark Raider Dome, which was closed in December 2013 and demolished during the 2014 summer break. In a recent meeting, the Cleveland City Council received an update on the facility’s construction from Tom Cloud, chairman of the Cleveland City school board. “We are still pretty much on target,” Cloud said of the new opening date. That date had been pushed back a few months due to weather delays since construction was launched in late 2014.Cleveland High School principal Autumn O’Brien repeatedly has stated that the loss of the school’s main gymnasium has affected wellness education, requiring those classes to be temporarily conducted at the schools’ smaller athletic facilities. The construction of Raider Arena has been capped at $11 million, according to an agreement between the city school board and the Cleveland City Council.
