An update on a story from yesterday, from WRCB Channel 3…

A Bradley County man is recovering after he was severely beaten right outside of his home and business. It happened on Spring Place road. His injuries were so bad he had to be treated in Chattanooga.

The victim was outside watering his nursery when the attack happened. His wife tells Channel 3 her husband’s injuries were so severe she could barely recognize him.

“There was just pouring blood everywhere and I didn’t know what to do and I started having panic attacks,” Janet explained.

“Janet,” the victim’s wife did not want to be identified, her husband was attacked right outside their home.

“Deputies, when they responded were able to determine that he had been severely beaten with an object,” said James Bradford, Bradley County Communication Director.

Janet believes the suspects were trying to rob the couple.

The sheriff’s office hasn’t confirmed those details. They are still working on a timeline of events. Janet said her husband has at least a dozen wounds on his head and several broken bones.

The Bradley Sheriff’s Office says the victim’s injuries are severe, but not life threatening. Anyone with information should call authorities.

From the Chattanoogan…

Criminal Court Judge Don Poole has reduced the bond for the school bus driver charged in the wreck that killed six Woodmore Elementary students.

Judge Poole, in a written opinion, cut the bond to $50,000 for Johnthony Walker.

He said if he makes the bond, he will need to be under GPS monitoring.

Walker will not be allowed to drive.

Judge Poole said Walker has no prior criminal record, is a responsible individual who was employed at two different jobs, and has strong family ties. He also had responsible character witnesses, the judge said.

Walker has been held in isolation at the Hamilton County jail.

From the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and administration officials announced plans to reinstate federal work requirements for “able-bodied” adults without dependents for eligibility in the federal food stamp program.

In a news release, administration officials estimate about 58,000 of the 1 million or so Tennesseans now on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or “SNAP” as the food stamps program is now called, now do not meet work requirements and will be affected.

The move is scheduled to occur Feb. 1.

Haslam also plans to push legislation next year in the General Assembly “to incentivize work, reduce fraud and “strengthen program integrity” in the state’s welfare programs.

For example, the state will seek approval to join a multi-state cooperative to identify instances of “dual participation” in SNAP programs in other states.

Tennessee’s work SNAP requirements were suspended in 2008 during the Great Recession when tens of thousands of state residents lost their jobs.

Haslam and Human Services Commissioner Danielle Barnes say that with the state’s record low unemployment rates and significant job growth, the waiver is no longer needed across most of the state. But it will remain in place in 16 counties designated as economically distressed.
