Just a reminder…

The 30th annual Downtown Cleveland Halloween Block Party kicks off this evening at 5PM at the courthouse square. As a result, the following road closures will take place today beginning around 11:30AM: Ocoee, Broad, and Church Streets will be temporarily closed from Inman Street to Central Avenue. First and Second Streets will be temporarily closed from Worth Street to Parker Street. Centenary Avenue from Ocoee Street to Harle Avenue will be temporarily closed, as well as a section of Harle Avenue from Willow Street to 13th Street.

It is recommended you do not park on the streets inside the Block Party venue after 11:30 a.m. today. Over 50 vendors will be setting up their booths in less than four hours.

In news today…

Shelves are stocked in preparation of the much anticipated November 1st opening of the new Food City in Athens. The 54,000+ square foot supermarket is located on South Hill Street.    

The location includes an in-store bakery/deli, complete with a hot food bar, large café seating area and expanded cheese section.  A deluxe fresh food bar is also available, featuring a wide variety of soup, wings, salad and fruit selections.  Full service meat and seafood departments offer pre-marinated and seasoned oven ready products, plus a complete selection of top quality meats that are all-natural with no solutions added, including Certified Angus Beef and fresh sushi.

Rapid checkout service is provided by six traditional check-out lanes, one express lane and four self-check-outs.  

The Athens Food City will be the company’s first location to include a Starbucks.  Located at the front of the store, Starbucks will offer a wide assortment of blended hot and cold coffees and beverages.  For added convenience, the store also offers a Food City Pharmacy to assist with prescription services and a Food City Gas N’ Go, featuring a large five pump station, including diesel fuel.

Food City’s GoCart curbside pick-up allows customers to select their purchases on-line at foodcity.com.  Their order is filled by a professional shopper and loaded into their vehicle when they arrive at the store.  And, they can pay for their purchases on-line or by credit or debit card at the time of pick-up.

It’s that time of the month again — the labor force estimates for September are in! The seasonally adjusted US unemployment rate for September was 4.2%, which is down from 4.4% one month ago, and down from 4.9% one year ago. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Tennessee was 3%, which is down from 3.3% one month ago, and down from 4.9% one year ago.

Moving closer to home, the unemployment rate for Bradley County was 2.8%, down from 3.5% in August, and down from 4.9% one year ago. For Polk County, the unemployment rate was 3.3%, down from 4.2% in August, and down from 6.2% one year ago.

November will be a month when Cleveland Utilities’ electric rates will increase.

CU CFO and Vice President Marshall Stinnett informed the board of Cleveland’s public utility in a recent gathering that electric rates for the coming month will jump by 1.84 percent over October, bringing Cleveland Utilities customers to a rate of 9.133 per kilowatt hour.

For the month of October, customers saw a rate of 8.968 kWh.

The utility’s increase is once again being driven by a fuel cost adjustment by the Tennessee Valley Authority. As in previous months, the rate adjustment is being forwarded to the 31,688 customers of the city utility.
