(This story has been updated to reflect the student in question attends Shenandoah Baptist Academy. Previously, we had indicated the student attends Silverdale. We apologize for any inconvenience.)

The Bradley County Commission met on Monday for a rather interesting meeting. Continued discussion took place regarding the child who was not allowed to play with her previous year’s school basketball team. The student attends Shenandoah Baptist Academy, but was playing at Taylor as Shenandoah Baptist Academy does not have a team. The child’s mother had been advised the child was no longer allowed to play due to a park and recs rule that had existed for several years – despite being allowed to play before. Commissioner Peak discussed a meeting held with parks and rec recently where they would not allow an exception to be made. She also discussed a series of state laws that require minutes to be kept of all meetings under the auspices of city or county. Meetings without said minutes are not considered valid and any changes made at those meetings are not valid either. Commissioner Peak can find no evidence of minutes for most of the meetings for Parks and Rec over the last several years and therefore believes the rule in question preventing the child from playing is null and void. The issue has been put on hold pending the involvement of the county attorney.

Other discussion was had in regards to the social media policy and the ideas of micromanaging county officials. After various arguments, votes, and discussions, Commissioner Blake presents a sub motion requiring that all elected officials create and submit their own social media policies by the end of the year or adopt the policy of the Mayor as presented. This was voted on and passed.
