Multiple phone calls into the 911 Communications Center led to patrol deputies responding to a residence on Lowery St. N.E. Upon arrival deputies discovered a deceased child inside the residence, which resulted into detectives responding to conduct a death investigation.

Their investigation is still in the early stages, but detectives don’t suspect foul play at this time. The deceased child’s body has been sent to Chattanooga, TN for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Cleveland, Tennessee paused Monday to remember those from Bradley County who gave their lives for their country.

The downtown Memorial Day ceremony has been held annually for more than 70 years.

Steve Stewart, the ceremony’s chairman the past 20 years announced he is stepping aside. He introduced the new chairman, Pedro Gonzales. The new chairman’s first task will be appointing a master of ceremonies for 2018.

Mayor Tom Rowland announced this Memorial Day service will be his last as master of ceremonies. The mayor has been the master of ceremonies for more than 50 years.

Members of the Chattanooga Division, U.S. Naval Sea Cadets presented the national colors and read the names of Bradley Countians fallen in war. The Aldersgate Garden Club placed flowers on the courthouse steps as the names were called.

Mayor Rowland continued the “Last Roll Call”” tradition of reading the names of veterans who passed away the last twelve months.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Thanks to a collective “strength in hiring” across most of the board, Bradley County’s unemployment rate for April dropped a full point to 3.5 percent, its best showing in 16 years.

The March rate had been 4.5, a figure that raised a few brows because of fears it might be signaling a trend in which 2017 numbers were continuing to hover slightly above comparable months from the previous year.

However, strong gains in leisure and hospitality (tourism), manufacturing, retail trade, temporary services, local government, and private education and health services curtailed those concerns for now, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Before April’s promising employment report, Bradley County’s lowest jobless figure had come in April 2001, when the tally fell to 2.9 percent. A month later, it rose to 3.5, and has remained at or above that amount for the past 16 years.
