In news today…

Cleveland city manager Joe Fivas presented the downtown Cleveland action plan to the Cleveland City Council. Work began last September to explore options. Some of the action items outlined by Fivas include:

  • Working with TDOT on Inman Street redevelopment.
  • Hire design and engineering consultants to update the downtown master plan
  • Begin planning in June for concerts, events, and community gatherings.
  • Look at the Summit or the Old Cherokee Hotel as a possible project, bringing options to the council in July or August.
  • Complete the Greenway into downtown and combine the Taylor Spring project as a Greenway trailhead.
  • Development of a recreation and athletic complex at the former Whirlpool site. Demolition of Whirlpool would begin when the site plan is completed.

Planning and work, based on City council approval, would begin this Summer.

Also in news…

Bill Dethero was recognized Friday by the Cleveland Regional Jetport and the Cleveland Airport Authority for his service as a pilot with Angel Flight. The organization provides free medical air transportation to patients in financial need. Dethero attended the Airport Authority meeting with his wife Gwen. Jetport Director Mark Fidler presented Dethero with a limited edition print by aviation artist Sam Lyons provided by Eastern Aviation Fuels.

And finally…

Today, Walker Valley High School will be rewarded for their efforts in promoting teen traffic safety awareness and education. Working with their Students Against Distracted Driving Club, Walker Valley High School has earned a total of 3,925 points through the Reduce TN Crashes program, achieving the highest amount of points this year. Activities completed include displaying traffic safety messages, attending awareness events, sharing the message of traffic safety with one’s peers, and hosting school-wide events which include community involvement that incorporates many local and state partners.
