Lee University’s School of Nursing (SON) announces plans to initiate a new degree, Disaster and Healthcare Mission Management (DHMM) beginning fall 2018. This addition, which is a non-nursing degree, is designed to prepare graduates to function in team management roles for healthcare disaster teams and healthcare mission teams.

According to Dr. Sara Campbell, dean of Lee’s School of Nursing, from a healthcare perspective, the growing demand for global healthcare combined with the high occurrence of domestic and international disasters creates an obvious need for this program.

Some of the courses for the new major include Introduction to Humanitarian Healthcare Response, Basic Health Survival, Leadership Application in the Field, and Healthcare Disaster Response and Management Immersion Training. Various courses will be offered through other departments and schools on campus such as Crisis Response Finance and Funding and Social Dimensions and Impact of Disaster.

Registration for the major will open during early class selection this month. Incoming freshmen will also be allowed to declare the new major.

For more information, visit the School of Nursing’s website at http://www.leeuniversity.edu/academics/nursing/. Students may also contact Jake Fast, the enrollment and advising specialist for the SON, at jfast@leeuniversity.edu.

Clark is a Johnson City native who was re-elected to an eight-year term in 2014.

A resolution working through the Georgia General Assembly seeks to reclaim Tennessee land Georgia lawmakers believe belongs to their state.

HJR 943 cites a flawed survey of Georgia’s northern border with Tennessee and North Carolina in it’s call to reclaim land which includes the Tennessee River’s southern-most bank.

At it’s core, the resolution states a survey performed in 1818 was a bit over a mile south of where it should have been and the state line really includes a portion of the Tennessee River.

If Georgia were to extend it’s current border, the state would have access to the Tennessee River and the potential for 500 million gallons of water delivered each day to northern Georgia and Atlanta.

Georgia has passed several resolutions throughout the years attempting to move the border but nothing has ever come of it. The current resolution calls for the formation of a Georgia-Tennessee-North Carolina Boundary Line Commission which would “proclaim the true boundary.”

With little motivation to join such a committee, it’s likely the governors of Tennessee and North Carolina will take a pass on joining, especially given the commission would be abolished on Dec. 1, 2018.

The resolution has passed in the Georgia House and is currently on it’s second reading in the Senate.
