Two parents are facing aggravated child neglect charges after police found a child locked in a room and several dead animals inside the family’s freezer.

Soddy Daisy police received a tip and visited the home on Depot Street for a welfare check. They found three children living in poor conditions.

Investigators said a neighbor concerned about three children living there decided to call. They took them to the hospital to be checked out after seeing the filthy conditions.

Dustin and Staci Tallent are facing aggravated child neglect charges. On top of that, officers discovered nearly two dozen animals. About half of them were dead in a freezer. The Humane Educational Society of Chattanooga was called in to help rescue the ones still alive. They’re now treating four dogs, three cats, 1 rabbit, a snake, and a lizard. Family members said they didn’t realize the couple had so many animals. HES’ executive director said they’ll be filing animal neglect charges against the couple at the minimum. That’s in addition to the charges they’re already facing.

Residential construction moved to the forefront in Cleveland City building permits during the month of May.

There were 24 residential requests for the month, totaling $3,515,310. There were 24 requests for alterations, additions and upgrades, but the total estimated cost of this work was only $618,962. There was only a single commercial permits, but it was for a major project at $733,000.

Total building permits fees for the month was $20,362 for $4,867,272 in construction.

The major commercial project is by Dillard Construction Inc. The firm is planning an addition to its building at Corporate Drive S.W. The estimated cost of the project is $733,000.

The name of the truck driver who died in the June 18 accident on Interstate 75 in Bradley County was incorrect when first presented to media.

The Cleveland Daily Banner was told by the Tennessee Highway Patrol that 61-year-old Joseph McCurry was killed in the accident just south of the Charleston exit. However, the THP later identified the victim as Joseph McCurry Claxton of Gurley, Ala. Verification of the name was given to the Banner late Friday morning.

The accident occurred around 10:38 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the interstate, at the 32-mile marker, and involved the tractor-trailer driven by Claxton and a car on the shoulder of the highway.
