The Cleveland Bradley County Public Library Board met recently in a formal gathering, discussing not only the library’s positive community impact, but also voting on its new board officers.

Board chairman John Hagler began the voting on the new library board officers for 2018-19. Barbara Fagen was chosen as chair, Carolyn Jackson as vice-chair, Margaret Schenck as treasurer and library director Andy Hunt as secretary. Hagler expressed his faith in the upcoming board members.

Hagler also lauded Hunt’s work in maintaining a balanced budget for the library, which was met with applause for Hunt from the board.

Cleveland Utilities had zero recordable lost-time and zero recordable vehicle accident incidents for the first six months of 2018.

In addition, the utility achieved a 1.43 percent Occupational Safety and Health Administration recordable incident rate for the same period, beating the industry average of 4 percent.

The announcement was made during CU Board’s regularly scheduled meeting Friday at the Tom Wheeler Training Center.

CU Safety Manager Nathan Vann said it was a good first six months for 2018.

Employees at CU have worked 708,365 consecutive hours without a lost-time injury, as well as 209,354 cumulative hours from January to June. In addition, there were 434,827 cumulative vehicle hours recorded from January to June.

CU president Tim Henderson was pleased with the results.

Police say a scary situation in an Athens neighborhood ended in a man taking his life.

It happened around 9 a.m. Saturday morning in a subdivision off of US Highway 11.

Officers received a call that a man had just shot into the front door of a home.

An officer saw the suspect on the road. Police say as they came close, the man pulled out one of several handguns and shot himself. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to the preliminary report, the man had tried to break into his estranged wife’s home, but she ran to a neighbor’s house. The report says he then followed her and fired into that house.
