During the Bradley County Commission’s meeting on Monday, several items were covered. A new program called “My Ride”, founded by Jill Hall, was announced. It is a driving service for senior citizens which is a door to door service, expected to launch in September for both Bradley and Hamilton Counties. All drivers with My Ride are volunteers who work three hours a month, and must pass a background check before being allowed to work. Work is progressing on the Pie Center, a partnership for job opportunities for students, which will provide job training for students K-12. The Pie Center is expected to start taking students as early as this fall on site at schools and then move into their building once it is completed.

During the Cleveland City Council meeting, all items on the agenda were passed, including a request for $250,000 from Cleveland State Community College. As a result, they have reached their goal of $2.5 million which allows them to receive the $22 million grant from the state, and thus to complete a new building and renovations to the campus. This is the first major project of this nature on the campus since it opened nearly 50 years ago.

For the first time in 28 years, Cleveland residents will be deciding upon an individual to fill the shoes of long-time mayor Tom Rowland. Current 24th district Representative Kevin Brooks and retired educator, Duane Schriver, are the current candidates for Cleveland City Mayor.

At noon today, The Rotary Club of Cleveland will host a Mayoral debate at the Museum Center at Five Points. The purpose of the debate is to provide Rotarians the opportunity to engage with the Cleveland mayoral candidates.
