Topping our news today…

On Monday evening, a 27-year-old employee of Waste Connections was killed when a truck fell on him at the garage on Industrial Drive. Sources indicate that employees were apparently doing maintenance work on the trucks over the holiday.

As of news time, the victim had not yet been identified. We will bring you more on this developing story as it becomes available.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Three men charged with aggravated robbery and criminal conspiracy in connection with Friday’s assault on a pizza delivery person will appear in court today.

The delay is due to no court sessions being held Monday in Bradley County General Sessions Court because of the New Year’s holiday.

As reported over the weekend, the Cleveland Police Department’s SWAT team’s negotiations with the three suspects who reportedly robbed the pizza delivery person Friday evening led to their arrests. Sgt. Evie West, public information for the Cleveland Police Department, said that the SWAT team responded to the scene of the robbery. She said that the Emergency 911 Communications Center received a phone call just before 9 p.m. Friday to the Blythewood Apartments on Stephens Road where the Domino’s pizza delivery driver was reportedly robbed.

Police reported Saturday that a handgun, knife and pizzas were stolen from the delivery driver, and information was given that the three men who were involved in the robbery may have entered a nearby apartment.

Cleveland Police officers attempted at first to talk with the suspects, and when that proved unsuccessful in the trio being taken into custody, the CPD’s SWAT team responded to the scene and continued negotiations with the individuals inside the apartment.

Soon after these negotiations began, two of the individuals inside the apartment came out to turn themselves in to the police, according to the CPD report.

Consent was given to enter the apartment, and several other individuals were located inside. West said the stolen handgun, knife and pizzas were found inside the apartment. Only one of the others inside the apartment was arrested, police said.

The three individuals allegedly involved in the incident were identified as Kevin Bowens, 18; Marques Jimerson, 22; and Matthew Garman, 19. Each was charged with aggravated robbery and criminal conspiracy.

An update on a previous story, from the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Different states may have their own motorcycle helmet laws, some with no restrictions and others mandating drivers and passengers to wear helmets.

While Tennessee requires motorcycle operators to wear helmets, Florida and other states’ laws are quite different, including that the driver does not have to wear a helmet if he or she is 21 years of age or older and have specific insurance to cover any possible personal injury.

The issue recently arose after a Cleveland resident – David Kibble – died in a multi-vehicle accident in Florida last weekend. The Florida State Patrol reported  Kibble was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, but did not indicate if wearing a helmet would have helped Kibble survive the accident.

Kibble was not in violation of laws by not wearing a helmet in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, state statutes permit persons over 21 and if covered by $10,000 medical benefits insurance.

And finally…

It’s that time of the month again — the labor force estimates for November are in! The seasonally adjusted US unemployment rate for November was 4.1%, the same as one month ago, and down from 4.6% one year ago. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Tennessee was 3.1%, which is up from 3% one month ago, and down from 5.1% one year ago.

Moving closer to home, the unemployment rate for Bradley County was 3.1%, up from 2.8% in October, and down from 4.2% one year ago. For Polk County, the unemployment rate was 3.9%, up from 3.6% in October, and down from 5.3% one year ago.
