From WRCB Channel 3…

Two additional cases of measles were confirmed by the Tennessee Department of Health State Public Health Laboratory Monday. This brings the total number of measles cases in Tennessee in 2019 to three. The two new cases are associated with the first measles case in Tennessee this year which was announced April 18, and were identified as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines an ‘outbreak’ as 3 or more cases.

Measles symptoms may include fever, runny nose, body aches, watery eyes and white spots in the mouth. Several days after these symptoms start, a red, spotty rash typically begins on the face and spreads over the body. Symptoms may develop any time in the 21 days following exposure to the illness.

Anyone who believes they or a loved one has measles symptoms should stay home and contact a health care provider to make arrangements to visit a health care facility before going to a health care center to prevent further exposure of others to the illness.

Concerned parents commented on WRCB’s Facebook post on Friday, when the station was notified about Copper Basin Elementary Principal Jill Franklin, a teacher, and bookkeeper being placed on leave. They make up three out of 20 teachers in the school system, according to Dr. James Jones the Director of Schools in Polk County.

According to Dr. Jones, the disciplinary steps are the result of an investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office. He said someone familiar with the position stepped into the role of acting principal on Friday.

The Tennessee Comptroller’s Office could not confirm the investigation due to policy. The office ensures public dollars or property is spent or used appropriately, according to Director of Communications John Dunn.

As the investigation continues, Dr. Jones wants parents to know student safety isn’t in question.

As for the kindergarten teacher, he said they will have a substitute teacher in that position for 20 days until they have to put a certified teacher in that position.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said two 6th grade students at South Cumberland Elementary School are facing charges over a plot to carry out a school shooting.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a school resource officer learned of a rumor the students had created a “hit list” of students they planned to shoot.

Investigators said they did not discover the hit list, but they did find a hand-drawn map of the school and a plot to smuggle weapons into the school, shoot students and faculty, then commit suicide before law enforcement arrived.

Officials said they discovered the students had been discussing preparations to carry out the plot over the two weeks prior to the investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office said they conducted a search of the student’s homes, but no weapons were found. The parents of the children involved cooperated with the investigation.

Both students were arrested and taken to Cumberland County Juvenile Detention Facility where they are awaiting a hearing in juvenile court.
