Cleveland businessman Allan Jones has instructed his advertising firm to halt commercials during NFL games after the Tennessee Titans and other teams snubbed the National Anthem.

He instructed an official of the Tombras group, “Effective immediately, please remove all commercials for Check into Cash, Buy Here Pay Here USA, or U.S. Money Shops from airing during NFL games this entire season.

Jones said, “Our companies will not condone in any form the unpatriotic behavior demonstrated by the NFL. For the 29 states we operate in, this isn’t much for them, but it’s a lot for us. The Tombras group is our ad agency in Knoxville and our national media buyer for both TV and Radio. . . and don’t look for Hardwick on the NFL either.”

Plans for Cleveland’s 175th anniversary celebration ran into a couple of detours Tuesday during a meeting of the Anniversary Committee meeting at the city’s municipal building.

Tennessee Rep. Kevin Brooks, a member of the committee, announced that Gov. Bill Haslam has a conflict and will not be able to be the guest speaker at the historic celebration and sit-down meal on Friday, Oct. 20, at Lee University’s Communication and Arts Building downtown.

Brooks is exploring other opportunities for a guest speaker, and is also following up on invitations to U.S. Reps. Chuck Fleischmann and Scott DesJarlais and U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker.

Another glitch in the committee’s planning process is Mayfield Dairy in Athens also has a conflict and will be unable to provide ice cream for the community picnic from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5. The community event will be held at the Greenway Park and Pavilion near Raider Drive.

Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland continues to invite local businesses, industry, and individuals to join in this celebration by donating door prizes to be distributed at the community picnic. The names of all these contributors will be announced during the picnic.

Anyone wishing to donate to the door prize list can call the mayor’s office at the municipal building.

The committee is looking at alternatives for refreshments at the picnic, and still hoping for the traditional cake and ice cream. Local bakeries are providing cake and cupcakes.

The next meeting of the Anniversary Committee has not been scheduled.
