Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and the Financial Stimulus Accountability Group (FSAG) today announced an initial $50 million in federal Coronavirus Relief Funds for the new Supplemental Employer Recovery Grant (SERG) program to provide additional relief to small businesses suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This new wave of funding includes specific support for minority-owned, women-owned, and veteran-owned businesses, as well as businesses owned by disabled persons.

Small business owners and non-profit organizations can apply to receive reimbursement for eligible direct expenses or costs incurred as a result of business interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program’s application window will open October 7, 2020, and remain open until December 29, 2020, or until all funds are depleted.

Hamilton County Commissioner Warren Mackey says he plans to present a resolution to remove a Confederate statue outside the county courthouse in downtown Chattanooga.

This comes as a former UTC professor’s petition for the removal of the monument to Lt. Gen. Alexander P. Stewart has circled the community, and already received more than a thousand signatures.

During a commission meeting Wednesday, one caller emphasized what they say the statue continues to represent, saying, “It is a slap in the face to Black people who have suffered racism, suffered oppression for 400 years. It is a symbol that plays into the hands of modern white supremacists.”

Commissioner David Sharpe suggests removing all monuments to indicate that the courthouse grounds are for all people.

More than two dozen contractors will be released from their jobs at TVA on Friday in response to President Trump’s tightening of temporary worker visa rules.

Buddy Eller, Vice President of Communications and Public Relations for TVA, confirmed the move saying TVA will release 32 contractors from its IT department by October 9.

Eller tells Channel 3 the change is in response to the administration’s executive order on workers with H-1B visas, which President Trump signed on August 3. Trump issued the executive order to block federal agencies from outsourcing jobs and, according to White House press releases, create more opportunities for American workers.

In August, TVA rescinded about 200 layoffs that were connected to plans to outsource work in its IT department and said it would review contract companies hired by TVA to ensure compliance with the executive order.
