Parents and children from Chattanooga traveled to Nashville to make their case for seat belts on school buses after the deadly Woodmore crash that happened last November.

State lawmakers in the House Transportation Subcommittee gave the bill the green light on Wednesday.

A lengthy agenda for the House Transportation Subcommittee meant state lawmakers only had a few minutes to talk about the proposal.

It would require school buses bought after July 1 to have seat belts and those on the road now would would them by July of 2023.

The cost was a concern for some, but the subcommittee looked at other potential issues too.

“Buses running over into water, fires, things that would happen exponentially quick. How are these seat belts going to prevent a child from not being able to get out?,” State Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver  said.

The subcommittee decided to push the bill forward. Emotions ran high after the vote.

The bill will now move onto the full House Transportation Committee.

State Rep. Favors said it could be taken up as early as next week.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

The Cleveland Municipal Planning Commission took steps Tuesday evening to take two separate parcels into the city.

One is a substantial property on Urbane Road at Tillie Lane, which also creates an unusual road configuration in that area. This property is a 110.9 acre tract which is home to Perry Stone’s youth ministry, the Omega Center International.

A second property is also being recommended to the City Council for inclusion inside the city limits. This is a parcel of 5.1 acres, more or less, on Michigan Avenue Road and Foxfire Road N.E. Jobe said this property is just off Michigan Avenue Road.

Both of these annexation requests will now go before the Cleveland City Council.
