Topping our news today, from the Chattanooga Times Free Press…

The Tennessee Valley Authority is drawing down its Chickamauga, Nickajack, Watts Bar and other reservoirs to prepare for heavy rains forecast for much of the Tennessee Valley from tropical storm Cindy, which is expected to come into TVA’s 7-state region beginning Thursday.

TVA is spilling water and drawing down its lakes to create additional water storage capacity in anticipation of 5 to 6 inches of rain moving into the Tennessee Valley region late Thursday through Saturday. Normal rainfall for the entire month of June is usually about 4 inches.

With Tennessee River lake levels dropping over the next few days, property owners should take appropriate measures to protect boats and other property that may be impacted by the drawdown. When TVA begins moving more water through its dams it will cause faster-than-normal river flows and excess debris. Extra caution should be taken in all river traffic and lake recreation. Reservoir levels could also rise quickly once the rainfall accumulates into the rivers, creeks and streams that flow into the reservoirs.

On Monday, TVA began to drawn down lake levels by releasing water through hydro turbines to generate electricity. If necessary, TVA will supplement turbine releases by spilling or sluicing excess water to further lower lake levels.

The Cleveland Amateur Radio Club will present a display of “Amateur Radio in Action” as a part of their participation in Field Day, a 24 hour communications exercise.

Members of CARC will operate their radios from their clubhouse, 560 Johnson Boulevard, in Cleveland.

Field Day, sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, kicks off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24. It will end 24 hours later on Sunday, June 25. The ARRL is the largest organization advocating on behalf of amateur radio in the world.

Steve Weber, President of CARC, said Field Day is a time of fellowship and fun for the thousands of amateur radio operators participating in the United States and around the world in several foreign countries.

Weber said guidelines the ARRL established for Field Day highlight two primary purposes.

First, participants hone their skills of establishing communication on international frequencies in the wake of a natural disaster such as a flood, tornado, or hurricane that has destroyed the infrastructure of normal communications, disabling phone service and the Internet.

Secondly, Weber said the ARRL, the national association for amateur radio, wants clubs and other groups participating in the communications exercise to display their work in a place easily accessible to the public.

One key aspect of Field Day is that all of the equipment used and the clubhouse will be powered by an emergency generator.

During Field Day the club will use the Cleveland – Bradley County Emergency Management Agency’s communications trailer that is equipped for communication on several amateur VHF, UHF, and HF frequencies.

Public visits to the site are encouraged to view amateur radio simulate operating in a disaster.

Club meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday nights at 7 p.m.
