From the Cleveland Daily Banner…

Tim Siniard reports: A petition advocating for the removal of a downtown Cleveland Confederate statue has attracted more than 2,000 signatures since it was posted online late Monday by a Lee University student.

According to the petition, the statue, which “lies directly across the street from Lee University, a Christian campus teeming with racial and international diversity … no longer represents the ideals of the great city of Cleveland.”

In addition, it contends the statue “breeds discomfort for many students (and residents) of color.”

Kelsey Elaine, who is a Lee University junior majoring in political science, told the Cleveland Daily Banner that she posted the petition late Monday night at about midnight.

She said when she first began attending Lee, she was surprised to see the statue located so close to the university campus, as well as in a place of honor.

Kaitlyn Gebby reports: A student at Cleveland State Community College has tested positive for COVID-19, the first known case on the college campus.

The student tested positive Tuesday, according to a news release submitted by the college Wednesday morning. Cleveland State determined the student was exposed on the second floor of the Science Building. The campus will close the building for a week for cleaning, per CDC guidelines, and reopen on June 16. The student was last on campus June 2.

All other campus facilities will remain open for summer courses.

Cleveland State is asking anyone who visited that area of campus to self-isolate for 14 days “from the last date the individual visited the location,” the release states, or until June 16.
