Three kayakers enjoying the Fourth of July on the Ocoee River on Tuesday ended up having to be rescued from the river after their boats were affected by the roiling waters of the river.

According to reports, two women and one man were kayaking on the river when they lost their boats. The river was flowing briskly due to the rains that had struck the area over the weekend and the early part of this week.

The weather may have actually helped the kayakers, as they were said to have hung onto tree limbs in the Ocoee until crews with West Polk County Fire and Rescue helped them out of the river.

West Polk County Fire and Rescue Chief Steve Lofty was on the scene, but was unable to identify the kayakers by name, or where they were from.

There were no injuries reported by officials.

The Bradley County Historical and Genealogical Society will hold its regular quarterly meeting at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 9, in the Community Room of the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library.

Dr. Richard R. Jones, professor of Anthropology at Lee University, will be the guest speaker. The program is free, and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The subject of Jones’ presentation will be the large tunnel which was discovered about a year ago underneath Inman Street, beneath the Bradley County Fire/Rescue Squad building adjacent to the Museum Center at Five Points.

Lee University staff and students joined members of the museum staff in gathering data concerning the old tunnel, and its history.

During Sunday’s meeting, Jones will reveal the findings of the research and will provide information the research team has dug up about the mysterious tunnels.

This is a free event to the public. The Bradley County Historical and Genealogical Society is dedicated to preserving local history. You can follow the society on Facebook at Bradley County (Tennessee) Historical and Genealogical Society.

Erlanger says the toddler was treated for burns to the hand at Erlanger Children’s Hospital.
